The thesis of Tears of Eros is that consciousness of death and eroticism are intimately connected. To illustrate his point, Georges Bataille, includes many works of art which also have a connection to Hannibal. They include versions of Leda and the Swan and Judith and Holofernes as well as paintings by Vermeer, Durer and Balthus. Here's a sampling:
Balthus' The Room
Balthus' The Dream
Pontormo's Leda and the Swan
Cranach's Judith and Holofernes
Vermeer's The Procuress
(This is the only Vermeer in the book)
