Home > Hannibal > Vide Cor Meum

Here are the words to Vide Cor Meum from the soundtrack as best as I can tell. The lyrics come from Dante's La Vita Nuova. The song was written by Patrick Cassidy, a brilliant Irish composer. (For more on Patrick Cassidy, visit the Official Patrick Cassidy web site.)

ITALIAN/LATIN

Chorus: E pensando di lei
Mi sopragiunse uno soave sonno

Ego dominus tuus
Vide cor tuum
E d'esto core ardendo
Cor tuum
(Chorus: Lei paventosa)
Umilmente pascea.
Appresso gir lo ne vedea piangendo.

La letizia si convertia
In amarissimo pianto

Io sono in pace
Cor meum
Io sono in pace
Vide cor meum

ENGLISH

Chorus: And thinking of her
Sweet sleep overcame me

I am your master
See your heart
And of this burning heart
Your heart
(Chorus: She trembling)
Obediently eats.
Weeping, I saw him then depart from me.

Joy is converted
To bitterest tears

I am in peace
My heart
I am in peace
See my heart

A reader asked me what the words meant, so I thought I'd copy my reply here.

The phrase, "Weeping, I saw him then depart from me," is from the translation in the book (and the movie), Hannibal, so are the words "trembling" and "obediently". I used these translations because I wanted to relate the song to the part in the movie where Hannibal and Allegra recite Dante's first sonnet from La Vita Nuova. Personally, I wouldn't translate "Appreso gir lo..." that way because the word "weeping" would seem to modify "I" when it is Love who is weeping (piangendo). Paventare is "to fear" but "trembling" certainly gets the idea across. Umilmente is more accurately "humbly" but I like "obediently" too.

I studied Italian prior to my trip to Florence but I didn't know Italian well enough to translate these lyrics by sight. I had help from my trusty electronic English-Italian Language Teacher, by ECTACO, Inc. It was a great help to me in Florence and I still use it now and then when I peruse La Nazione. It talks too!
